Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 12, 2018 (SKNIS): This years’ Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) will see officials taking the positives of having an enterprising mind and being one’s own boss to schools, as part of the week of activities which runs from November 12 -18, 2018 under four distinct themes: recognizing women, youth, inclusion in entrepreneurship and connecting Eco/support systems around the world.

Other activities for the week include: Youth Cents: Youth in Business – Round Table Discussion, and a DECA sponsored Competition, which launches in all the High Schools on Monday; Business Session: Logistics and Regional Certification and Women’s Symposium: Stepping In-Out-Up-&-Over on Tuesday; Business Session: Negotiation, Registration, Licensing & Trademarks and Young Entrepreneurs at the Stock Exchange on Wednesday; Business Session: Financing, Record Keeping, Intellectual Property Rights & Royalty Collection on Thursday; Business Expo under the theme Shop Small at the Independence Square, Launch of the Small Business Development Centre at the Independence Square on Friday, as well as GEW Mixer & Closing Ceremony at Uncle Fats on Saturday. Build Your Business Weekend is slated from Thursday to Saturday.

According to the Minister with responsibility for International Trade, the Honourable Lindsay Grant, the acronym “DECA originally stood for “Distributive Education Clubs of America,” but that changed and now the group calls itself “An Association of Marketing Students,” to better describe its focus. But the DECA acronym remains. The local competitions are therefore fashioned from this organization,” he added.

In officially declaring the week open, Minister Grant noted that these activities planned to celebrate GEW week 2018 are the collaborative efforts of four (4) of our local stakeholders: the National Entrepreneurial Development Division (NEDD), the Department of Youth Empowerment, the Department of Culture and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

The minister used the occasion to encourage one and all to get involved, and for others to encourage persons around them to find a GEW event and help “us ensure that we leave no one behind.”
